Charm slots and upgrades: turn collecting into a useful build · Ghost of Yōtei

Separate unlocking more slots from upgrading individual charms, then plan routes without unnecessary combat grinding.

Slots and levels solve different problems

Collecting additional charms progresses slot unlocks; fox dens and shrine climbs are useful sources. Improving an individual charm instead follows its displayed challenge. Repeating the same fight is not the answer when your real problem is insufficient equipment slots.

Read the equipment screen before leaving

Our editorial recommendation is to check three things before a trip. Trying to upgrade everything together can pull your route and fighting style in conflicting directions.

  • Identify one charm you would like to add and the slots you can currently use.
  • Read the next challenge and current counter for one upgradable charm you actually use.
  • Pick a new charm to collect and a separate upgrade objective along your next route.

Activities outside combat can improve a build

Challenges do not all ask for the same action. Mother’s Charm is linked to shamisen songs, while Father’s Charm is linked to Sumi-e paintings. A combat-oriented reward does not necessarily upgrade through kills. Read the current requirement in Gear → Charms.

Combine two goals on a short route

If you need another slot and want to explore, choose an unfinished fox den or shrine on the map first. Add an activity matching your current upgrade challenge if it lies along that journey. When the relevant activity is in a distant region, save it for a later route instead of forcing an immediate detour.

You can consider combat challenges while clearing a camp. But if unfamiliar tools consume your healing resources, lower the target. One new charm and partial challenge progress are still a useful outcome from a single expedition.

When a counter does not move

Before repeating an action many times, reread the challenge’s verb and conditions. Defeating an enemy differs from staggering one; a particular weapon or situation may matter. Compare the counter before and after one qualifying action to catch misunderstandings early.

This is not an exact unlock-threshold table or a replacement for every patch’s challenge values. It is a base-campaign planning guide; prioritize the condition displayed in your current game.
