The two totals describe different sets
There are 15 open-world paintings and three additional quest paintings, making 18 overall. An Artist’s Eye uses the 15 field locations. A map showing 15 and an activity total using 18 are therefore not automatically contradicting each other.

Separate collection from combat upgrades
Painting rewards include hats, headbands, and masks. Do not plan around a new painting increasing the damage of every weapon. If combat is blocking progress, prioritize the activity that addresses your skills or equipment; use paintings as a scenery and appearance-collection goal.
When a reward appears, read its name and inspect it in your equipment screen. This short confirmation tells you what you earned and gives you a dependable point at which to tick the location off.

Finding the seat and following the drawing
Start at the painting spot and follow the directional touchpad prompts. If the scenery looks correct, check the immediate area for the interaction point before assuming you need a different location.
A flat map does not show every height change or entrance. If you are at the apparent coordinate, check higher rocks, connecting paths, and enclosed spaces separately. Imperial Sakura is a useful example: its icon can appear coastal, but the painting is inside Matsumae Castle.

Check one region at a time
Use this distribution when auditing only the 15 field paintings. Keeping quest paintings out of this regional checklist is the important part.
| Region | Field paintings |
|---|---|
| Yotei Grasslands | 4 |
| Ishikari Plain | 3 |
| Tokachi Range | 2 |
| Nayoro Wilds | 2 |
| Teshio Ridge | 2 |
| Oshima Coast | 2 |

When quest paintings do not solve a missing count
The two paintings in Memories of Home contribute to the activity count, but do not replace field locations for the painting trophy. Confirm which count the game is showing before comparing it with this map.
Then show only sumi-e markers and hide completed ones. Record locations you can confidently confirm rather than ticking everything from memory. Save uncertain places for a check on your next visit to that region; that is less frustrating than repeating the entire route.
