Follow The Saito Brothers route
The Ōdachi is learned from Yoshida during The Saito Brothers. Follow the objective toward his dojo near Horosaru Falls in Tokachi. Weapon acquisition occurs in the training portion, before the whole storyline ends.
Source note: PowerPyx’s header says Teshio, while its route text and Push Square point toward Tokachi. This guide therefore prioritises the quest objective and Yoshida’s dojo over that conflicting header.

Practise holding and releasing separately
Training includes holding the heavy-attack input and releasing it. Check Triangle on the default layout. In later fights, consciously separate the start of the hold from the release instead of repeatedly pressing without a plan.
Do not assume your familiar katana rhythm transfers unchanged. Watch where the new action begins and ends. Performing the input once and finding a reliable moment between enemy attacks are different learning steps.

Start with a heavy enemy, but check the surroundings
The Ōdachi is a response to heavy enemies. Our suggested first exercise is to select one large opponent as your main target, reducing the number of weapon decisions you need to make.
A suitable matchup will not help much if another enemy hits you from the side. Check the camera view before preparing an attack. Use a short action initially and observe the result instead of committing to a long sequence. This is an editorial practice suggestion, not a promise of safety.

A remaining sensei quest does not mean the unlock failed
The Path of the Odachi follows weapon acquisition. Its objectives include Marshland Homestead, Huranui Mill, the Junpei the Snatcher bounty and returning to Yoshida.
Read your active journal objective before repeatedly revisiting the original training location. If you have already visited several targets, check whether a final report is missing. Separating ownership of the weapon from completion of the teacher’s story avoids unnecessary travel.

First-use checklist
How the weapon feels depends on your techniques, upgrades and approach. This guide does not assert maximum damage or fixed upgrade costs. Read the current menus and use these checks to decide where the weapon fits.
- Have you completed Yoshida’s training on The Saito Brothers route?
- Can you equip the weapon, with only follow-up objectives remaining?
- Can you separate the heavy-attack hold from its release?
- Are you noticing other enemies while watching the heavy target?
